- Mrs Müllerova (E. Svobodova) informs her tenant Svejk (R. Hrusinsky) about the recent assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Svejk heads out to the local pub unaware that a secret police agent is also in there spying on people who talk about political subjects. After foolishly talking to the agent Svejk gets arrested for treason but soon after gets released on the account of being deemed officially stupid. Despite suffering from rheumatism Svejk decides to enlist in the army...
- Adapting Jaroslav Hasek's raucous satirical novel, and also bringing Josef Lada's equally famous illustrations to garrulous puppet life, posed Trnka one of his biggest creative challenges. Trnka himself felt that the final episode was the most artistically successful, but there's much to enjoy in all three, not least the way that the lackadaisical layabout Svejk's own self-serving anecdotes are realized through cut-out animation.
- Svejk is a dog trader Prague. He is charged for lèse-majesté, "injured majesty" and is supposed to be jailed. But the court finds him to be dim-witted, and he is committed to a mental asylum. There, the doctors examine his physical and mental status. When one of the physicians accuses Svejk of being a simulator, Svejk assures him that he is an officially approved imbecile poking fun at the trappings of empire and the absurdity of war, as Svejk personifies the power of passive resistance.
